$5,000 Spay/Neuter Grant Awarded to Rimrock Humane Society

The Rimrock Humane Society is pleased to announce that they have received another $5,000 grant from the DJ & T Foundation to assist low income families with low cost spay/neuters within Musselshell County! This has been a wonderful program which is now entering its third year here in the Roundup area. DJ & T has offered this particular grant with a twist . . . . $3,500 of the grant has to be spent on altering dogs over 45# and the remaining $1,500 can be used on small dogs and cats.

Bob Barker, well-known television personality, established the DJ&T Foundation in 1995. The Foundation's goal is to fund low cost spay/neuter clinics and voucher programs as a way to help relieve animal over population. Barker, who ends every "Price is Right" show with an appeal to viewers to spay or neuter their pets, felt compelled to do more to address the problem. The DJ&T Foundation is named in fond memory of Bob’s wife, Dorothy Jo, and his mother, Matilda (Tilly) Valandra, both of whom loved all animals.

So how does this work? A pet owner will contact the Humane Society to specify that they want to have their animal altered. The owner is responsible for making a donation of any amount that they can afford - - there is no set figure, it is strictly up to the owner to decide. The Rimrock Humane Society will then pay the vet bill in full and the DJ & T Foundation will reimburse the Humane Society for the difference on a monthly basis. It is felt by all parties involved in this granting process that owners need to take some fiduciary responsibility in altering their pet. This program is a WIN/WIN/WIN situation . . . the veterinarian is getting full payment for the surgery and does not need to volunteer time or services, the owner is getting a healthier pet at a more affordable price and the Rimrock Humane Society is gratified in seeing the community doing something about the pet overpopulation problem.

The Rimrock Humane Society will be concentrating on spaying/neutering the larger dogs of this community so if you have a dog over 45# and have been putting off getting him/her altered, please call (406) 323-3687. We will still assist with cat and small dog surgeries as long as there is funding available. The Society’s web site can be found at: www.rimrockhumanesociety.org.
